We offer expert treatments like braces and Invisalign, but there's one more aspect of treatment that's vital to your smile: retention.

Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer?

If you're close to finishing treatment with your Loxahatchee orthodontist, we know you're ecstatic about getting to see your new smile – but you're not quite out of the woods yet! After we take your braces off, we'll enter the retention phase, and this stage is vital to the longevity of your new smile. But why should you wear an orthodontic retainer? Once you get your braces off or finish with Invisalign, your teeth will be in new positions – but that's only half the story. While the teeth are in new positions, the ligaments and tissues supporting the teeth have yet to adapt to these new positions. This means that without a retainer, your teeth will drift back to their old positioning, erasing your hard-won new smile! Wearing retainers ensures your new smile has a chance to set into place and can last you a lifetime.

Types of Retainers

Just like the different forms of orthodontic treatment we offer, our practice is proud to provide a variety of different types of retainers. Each retainer has its own unique advantages, and we'll work with you to choose the best one for your unique situation. The retainers we offer include:
  • essixClear "Thermoplastic" Retainers: These retainers resemble Invisalign aligners, and they're made from clear thermoplastic material. They fit directly onto the dental arch, are almost invisible when worn, and are easy to take in and out, making them a highly convenient option.
  • drewgretainer.jpgAcrylic "Hawley" Retainers: Acrylic retainers, also called Hawley retainers, are made from a piece of molded acrylic with metal wires sticking out. These are highly durable and fit snugly in the mouth, providing excellent retention. Hawley retainers are the most common form of retainer and work well for most patients.
  • lingualbondedretainerFixed "Bonded" Retainers: Fixed retainers, also called bonded retainers, are different from other types in that they aren't removable. These are made from a metal wire that's cemented to the inside of the lower front teeth, helping to keep the insiders from growing crooked. While fixed retainers can't be removed, they're also invisible from the outside. Fixed retainers are a great option for patients who have a strong likelihood of orthodontic regression.
