little girl with braces Orthodontics are glad to provide you with the high-quality orthodontic treatments that you need for a straighter and healthier smile. Dr. Shults is glad to provide our services to patients of all ages in our warm and family-friendly office. In fact, if you have any children, we recommend that you bring them in at a young age so that we can provide a free screening and consultation.

What Age Should My Child Visit the Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a patient visit an orthodontist at the age of seven. This is the preferred age because it’s the earliest time that a patient can be sufficiently screened. By this age, a child’s adult molars will usually have erupted, allowing an orthodontist to examine the teeth’s front-to-back and side-to-side relationships and get a clear picture on the patient’s orthodontic health. A screening at this time will provide an opportunity to see if the teeth are developing properly. If they’re not, we’ll have a chance to catch a problem at an early stage.

We should also mention that this early screening doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be early orthodontic treatment for kids. If orthodontic treatment happens to be necessary, in most cases, we’ll just monitor your child’s development and wait for the right time to begin orthodontic treatment on your child.

Types of Problems That Early Treatment Can Fix

Early treatment and our braces for kids are capable of fixing many common problems that include:

  • Overbites – Having an overbite can cause jaw pain, speech issues, and oral health problems.

  • Crossbites – These can cause unfavorable growth and cause tooth wear to become uneven.

  • Openbites – These can potentially result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments.

  • Protruding teeth – Teeth that are protruding are more likely to get harmed or damaged.

  • Crowded teeth – Not only can they cause misalignment of the teeth, but they’ll make it harder to properly clean the teeth, which will make them more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.

Added Benefits of Early Treatment

While early orthodontic treatment for kids can be used to fix many different bite problems, it can also provide many other benefits as well:

  • It can reduce the complexity of a later orthodontic treatment.

  • It will save you and your child time and money in the long run; orthodontic problems that are left alone will likely get worse over time.

  • It can create facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth.

  • It will reduce the need for tooth extraction.

  • It may even give your child a boost of self-esteem!
