While we provide expert orthodontic care to family members of every age - from children to adults - the most common age for our patients to get braces is during adolescence – and there's good reason for that!

Why Should My Teenager See An Orthodontist?

Adolescent or Phase II orthodontic treatments such as ceramic braces or Invisalign Teen are often a normal part of growing up for many teens. While we recommend children see the orthodontist for the first time by age 7, oftentimes we won’t begin treatment until you reach adolescence, turning 12 years old or older. It’s important for your child to see your family orthodontist to determine any potential oral health needs and monitor progress as your child grows. Teens are perfect for braces or Invisalign because:

  1. You get your permanent teeth. There's no set timetable for every kid, but generally by the age of 11-13 the deciduous (baby) teeth have all been lost, and the permanent ones have largely come in. Crooked teeth, gaps and bad bites can easily be detected and often become a concern for patients and their parents at this age. These problems rarely self-correct so this is when most parents seek orthodontic treatment for their children. Often, Dr. Shults will wait until your permanent teeth are in for the most effective treatment of these common orthodontic problems.
  2. Developing bones make orthodontic problems easier to treat. Adolescents is a time of rapid growth for all the bones in your body, and your facial bones and jaw are no different. Dr. Shults can usually take advantage of these growth spurts to help shape the bite and teeth correctly. It’s easier and less costly to treat orthodontic problems during this development time because your jaw and teeth respond better while they are growing. Once the permanent teeth have erupted, braces and/or aligners straighten the permanent teeth and finish correctly aligning the jaws. Pre-teens and teenagers have high metabolisms, which can help shorten overall treatment time, reduce the discomfort of orthodontic treatment and increase post treatment stability.
  3. Braces are widely used amongst teens. There's even a social element to getting orthodontic treatment in adolescence. If you need braces, you're not alone! Chances are you'll see some of your classmates from the West Palm Beach, Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, and Loxahatchee areas in our office. When it's done, you'll have a confident, dazzling smile that you will love and benefits that will last your whole life.

Family Orthodontic Treatment from Dr. Shults

Our friendly and professional staff is accomplished at utilizing a variety of orthodontic techniques so that the best possible option can be used for finding your beautiful smile. Once you have your first consultation and examination in our Wellington office, Dr. Shults will outline the various treatment options recommended for your particular situation. Orthodontic treatment may include:

  • Insignia Digital Braces. Teens love this new approach to traditional metal braces that uses advanced digital technology to create customized wires and brackets that perfectly fit your mouth. They can provide a more accurate treatment than other mass-produced forms of orthodontics.
  • Damon Self-Ligating Braces. Although self-ligating braces can be made of all the same types of material as traditional braces, they do not need elastics to work. The way they work makes these types of braces easier to wear and more comfortable and they require fewer visits to your Wellington orthodontist.
  • Clear or Ceramic Braces. If you find yourself more worried about people noticing that you have braces, consider using ceramic or clear braces. These braces have brackets made of ceramic material that closely match your existing tooth color, making them virtually invisible.
  • Invisalign Teen. These are the clear aligner trays made especially for teen patients to provide the least noticeable treatment option. A sequence of removable, clear aligners work to gradually move teeth, step by step. The teen version of this popular treatment includes a tiny blue dot that shows your teen when the aligners begin to wear out.

Besides these common types of orthodontic treatments, Dr. Shults can also recommend other appliances and procedures including surgery to solve more complicated orthodontic problems.

How Long Will Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment Take?

As an adolescent, the length of time one will wear braces or Invisalign Teen clear aligners can be anywhere from six months to two-and-a-half years, depending on the severity of your orthodontic issues. There is no set answer for that question as the length of treatment is dependent upon what Dr. Shults needs to do to move your teen's teeth into their beautifully perfect position. Once you finish treatment with your braces or aligners, you’ll enter the retention phase of treatment. This is when a customized retainer is worn at all times to hold the teeth in their new positions.
