Braces vs. Invisalign: Advice from Wellington’s Orthodontist

When you’re looking for an orthodontist in and around Wellington and West Palm Beach, FL, we atpasted image 0 Shults Orthodontics strive to stand out by offering a plethora of efficient and convenient orthodontic treatments. We realize that each patient has different needs and desires, which is why we always want to be able to supply an option that’s perfect for you. Having said that, most of the time, the decision for our patients comes down to our two most popular options: braces and Invisalign. It’s a common dilemma for many of our patients and our orthodontist, Dr. Randall C. Shults, would like to help make the decision at least a bit easier for you by giving you the pros and cons of both treatments.

Metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment and also probably what you picture when you think of orthodontics. This has been the standard orthodontic treatment for many years – and for good reason – this treatment is a time-tested method.

Pros of Braces

  • Braces offer an effective and proven treatment option.

  • For more complicated orthodontic problems, sometimes braces are the only feasible option.

  • Metal braces are very durable as they’re made of stainless steel.

  • You won’t have to worry about losing them or forgetting about them as they’re cemented onto your teeth.

  • There are also many different types of braces, including ceramic braces, a more discreet treatment option.

Cons of Braces

  • With braces, you’ll need to avoid certain foods because they can potentially break the wires and brackets of the braces.

  • Braces have many nooks and crannies where food can get trapped and cause tooth decay over time.

  • Cleaning your teeth will take longer because you’ll have to brush and floss around the wires and brackets.

  • The braces are made of metal, which can cause some discomfort.

Invisalign is a revolutionary new form of orthodontic treatment that uses plastic aligners instead of metal wires and brackets to shift teeth. This treatment is growing in popularity because of all the unique benefits it offers.

Pros of Invisalign

  • The aligners are virtually invisible, allowing Invisalign to be a discreet orthodontic treatment.

  • The aligners are removable, meaning that you can take them out whenever you want, just as long as you wear them the recommended 22 hours per day.

  • Because the aligners are removable, you’ll be able to continue eating all of your favorite foods.

  • Brushing and flossing follows the same process as it did before orthodontic treatment.

  • The aligners are durable, meaning that you’ll spend less time getting your orthodontics fixed or adjusted.

  • The polyurethane plastic aligners will provide you with a more comfortable treatment.

Cons of Invisalign

  • The aligners will need to be cleaned frequently in order to prevent food from getting trapped inside your aligners.

  • The aligners need to be worn at least 22 hours a day or they won’t work as intended.

  • Invisalign isn’t always an option for patients with more complex orthodontic problems; you need to be a suitable candidate for Invisalign.
