Braces-Friendly Holiday Treats

If you’ve already started your orthodontic treatment with braces, then you’re probably well aware that you’ll need to avoid eating anything that’s hard or sticky – a restriction that unfortunately limits your options. However, if you’re wearing braces this time of the year, you may have stumbled upon an unfortunate realization – many of your favorite holiday cookies may not be suitable for consumption now! And really…what would the holidays be without cookies? Not to worry though – we’ve provided you with several delicious cookie recipes that are perfectly safe for you to eat while you’re wearing braces.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Gingerbread men are typically a favorite of this time of year. But there’s a problem with that for braces wearers – they’re just too hard! To help out patients with braces who still want the deliciousness of ginger-flavored cookies, try out this
big soft ginger cookie recipe. It’s just as tasty and you won’t break your braces eating one!


  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup margarine, softened

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon water

  • ¼ cup molasses

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Sift together the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the margarine and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the water and molasses. Gradually stir the sifted ingredients into the molasses mixture. Shape dough into walnut sized balls, and roll them in the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place the cookies 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten slightly.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

Here’s another one of our favorite types of cookies that we’ve provided for you with this
peanut butter cup cookies recipe. These simple-to-make cookies combine all of the tastiness of a cookie and a peanut butter cup. It’s a two-for-one that’s twice as nice as most other cookies!


  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ cup butter, softened

  • ½ cup white sugar

  • ½ cup peanut butter

  • ½ cup packed brown sugar

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • 40 miniature chocolate covered peanut butter cups, unwrapped


Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Sift together the flour, salt and baking soda; set aside.

Cream together the butter, sugar, peanut butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla and milk. Add the flour mixture; mix well. Shape into 40 balls and place each into an ungreased mini muffin pan.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 8 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately press a mini peanut butter cup into each ball. Cool and carefully remove from pan.

Cracked Sugar Cookies

Lastly, we’d like to recommend this
cracked sugar cookies recipe. These sugar cookies are soft (melt-in-your-mouth soft!), which is fantastic for those who are wearing braces. Of course, since these are made of sugar, you’ll want to make sure to brush your teeth really good after you eat any!


  • 1 ¼ cups white sugar

  • 1 cup butter

  • 3 egg yolks

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets.

Cream together sugar and butter. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla.

Add flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Stir.

Form dough into walnut size balls and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Don't flatten. Bake 10 to 11 minutes, until tops are cracked and just turning color.
